Meeting today in Queens Park to continue to bring to the government's attention the lack of accessible healthcare for the people in Fort Erie. At the press conference I was able to talk about a couple that moved to Fort Erie to take care of elderly parents but who also had their own health issues. They came here because they needed to be close to a hospital and they thought Douglas Memorial would be able to take care of their needs. She could not drive due to medical restrictions and her husband with COPD and heart issues had an issue that required medical attention. They went to Douglas Memorial and were told there that they would have been better off had they called an ambulance from home. He was eventually transported to Welland hospital where his heart needed to be monitored and he spent three days in emergency because there were no beds. If the Ontario Government doesn't think that is a problem perhaps they should start counting the number of deaths that have occurred. Fort Erie Healthcare SOS and the Niagara Health Coaltion called a public meeting so our community could express their concerns with the closure of our Urgent Care when a person attending had a heart attack and sadly succomed to his heart failure. This has to stop no more deaths should have to occur - the government needs to do the right thing and properly finance our healthcare. We have all paid but we should not have to pay with our lives. The Ontario Health Coalition released their findings today on how many small and rural hospitals have been affected. Call your MPP, call your MP and call your Health Services and let them know our healthcare matters now!
